Exploder Than You are a ‘scrappy math punk’ trio from the South of England. Guitarist Billy, bassist Hayman and drummer Weezey have been playing together for 2 years. They were recently signed to Rabbit Ear Records, making them an introducing band of the month rather than an unsigned talent, but after giving them a listen I’m sure you’ll understand why I still chose to feature them.
So how did you guys meet and start playing together?
Weezey and Hayman previously played in a band called Bastard Eye Scream, and Billy was essentially a massive fanboy of them. After 7 long years together they amicably decided to call it quits due to various personal reasons. So Billy was summoned by Hayman and Weezey to start a new musical venture.
Who are your musical inspirations?
We’re hugely influenced by bands like Johnny Foreigner, Dananananaykroyd, Jank, and Blakfish. We also love instrumental math bands like Cleft, Axes, and And So I Watch You From Afar, which maybe explains why our music can have large instrumental sections.
How did you come up with your name?
We were messaging each other online trying to think of intentional grammatical errors that we thought were clever. We eventually settled on Exploder Than You and looking at it written down we felt really good about it. Little did we know, it would be a pain to say it out loud without people needing us to repeat it or write it down for them.
What has been your favourite moment as a band?
Supporting bands like Johnny Foreigner, Fish Tank, Cleft, and Floral has been absolutely incredible. We’ve been listening to those bands for years and it’s crazy to be able to share a stage with them and hang out with these people who have previously only lived in our iPods.
Where do you play most?
We play in Brighton 90% of the time because it’s our home and the music scene in Brighton is crazy! There’s a surprisingly big scene for mathcore which is pretty hard to come by.
What do you like to do when you’re not practicing/playing?
Mostly going to the pub, playing video games and wallowing in self-pity.
Tell us a little about your writing process?
Usually one of us will bring a riff or an idea to practice and then we’ll all build off of it. Generally whoever brings the idea takes the role of main creative director for that song, but we try to be as democratic as possible. Then we try our best to cram lyrics into a song riddled with noodly bits.
Any funny stories about things you’ve done as a band?
Nope. None whatsoever. We hate fun.
What are your hopes and plans for you the future?
Thank you very much Exploder Than Me for chatting with us. Where can we find your jams?
We have some music on our bandcamp, which is where you can download our first EP Melon. Our next EP Lemon is coming out on October 14th, so keep an eye out for that!
